The subway, also called metro (European Portuguese) or metrô (Brazilian Portuguese), is a type of high-capacity public transport generally found in urban areas.

In Brazil, the metro-railroad sector transports 3.7 billion passengers each year, has a network with a length of 1,105 kilometers, has 68 lines, 613 stations and 5,444 operational passenger cars. The sector employs 41 thousand employees and brings important socioeconomic benefits: it stops emitting 2.4 million tons of pollutants, reduces R $ 820 million in accident costs and saves time in traffic jams for R $ 30 billion.
